How iTest Works

Create and execute a test case

iTest® allows you to create tests via capture/replay or step-by-step construction.

iTest's built-in applications offer multi-protocol support to allow you to test complex equipment and systems accessed through command line interfaces (CLI), Web interfaces, SNMP, command shells, Serial Port or Tcl. As soon as you launch the application, iTest captures every action, command, and response. This capture mechanism creates a step for each action, written in the language of the device, so anyone developing or testing the device will be able to understand the test case.

For example, if you were conducting a manual test, you would connect to a device, log in, issue some commands, review key metrics, and log out. iTest would have captured the entire sequence, and then allowed you to instantly rerun those commands. You also can save these recorded actions as a test case and rerun them in the future. In this way, capture technology converts processes or steps that are typically performed manually into an automated test.

For many feature testers, capture/replay/edit provides a major step forward from manual processes. In addition, it allows all members of the QA organization to complete more testing in less time and contribute to automation.

iTest also allows you to build tests line by line using iTest commands, which are free of scripting language and expressed in common English. Experts often use this technique to make minor changes to an existing test and quickly build a test suite of similar tests.

Using the Test Audit feature within iTest, you can access and rerun test cases months after creating them. As a result, you do not have to rebuild tests when developers issue a new product release. Moreover, once you retrieve a test, this feature automatically creates a report documenting that the test was run and whether it passed or a defect was found.

"With the ability to automate testing earlier in the process, we can run test cases several times during the cycle. This not only allows us to accelerate our testing process, but it also allows us to be proactive and detect and resolve issues quickly and accurately."
